Phys. Ed. and Health Department
The Physical Best Curriculum
Physical Best is the core curriculum for fitness and physical education for the New York City public schools, K-12. Physical Best: Physical Education for Lifelong Fitness is a comprehensive health-related fitness education program focusing on aerobic activity, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility and body composition. The program is created by the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD) and the National Association of Sport and Physical Education (NASPE). This curriculum is different from what is commonly referred to as “traditional” physical education, where students are taught what to do, but not why. Physical Best enables students to learn why activity is important and how it benefits them today and for a lifetime. The emphasis is on the use of physical activity that students enjoy and promotes individual choices wherever possible so that there may be greater transfer to real life settings.
The Physical Best Curriculum supports the New York State Standards for Physical Education:
- Standard 1: Personal Health and Fitness-Students will have the necessary knowledge and skills to establish and maintain physical fitness, participate in physical activity, and maintain personal health.
- Standard 2: A Safe and Healthy Environment-Students will acquire the knowledge and ability necessary to create and maintain a safe and healthy environment.
- Standard 3: Resource Management-Students will understand and be able to manage their personal and community resources
Mr. Sheriff
This is my 14th year at Bedford Academy High School, I teach physical education and I also serve as the Assistant Athletic Director for all of our PSAL sport teams. I believe that all students need to understand what physical education is and why they need to take it. Physical education is more than just sports. All students should learn the values of exercise and wellness. With all the epidemics that are rising in teenage children, I believe that working out, eating right and keeping healthy is more important than it ever was. I believe that lifelong fitness not only helps you physically but also helps you mentally. The more you are able to work out and eat correct the better you will feel. My wish is that all the students here at Bedford graduate with the ability to keep themselves healthy, and understand the value of a healthy lifestyle
